Mrs. Dawn Fletcher

Welcome! My name is Dawn Fletcher, and I am thrilled to be an Art teacher here at John Small School. This is my 11th year at this incredible school, and I continue to be inspired by the amazing students I have the privilege to teach. It’s truly remarkable to witness their growth, and I am grateful to be part of their journey. Even more rewarding is the positive impact each student has had on my own life, constantly motivating me to grow and strive to be the best educator I can be. 

At John Small School, I am fortunate to work alongside supportive administrators who encourage us all to do our very best. I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at NC State University, as I believe in the power of continual learning. While I never want to leave the classroom, my passion for teaching also drives me to mentor new and beginning teachers. 

Teaching is my second career, and my educational path is diverse. I initially earned a BS in Interior Design from East Carolina University and spent 15 years running my own business. However, after much reflection, I realized my true calling was in education. I went back to ECU, earning a degree in Elementary Education, and later pursued my MAeD in Elementary Education and Teacher Leadership. I am currently working toward my Ph.D. in Educational Leadership. My teaching experience spans grades 2 through 5, and I've taught both ELA and Math. This year, I have transitioned into the role of Art teacher, blending my design background with my passion for education – and I absolutely love it! 

On a personal note, I’ve been happily married to my husband, JD, for 34 years. We have two wonderful sons, Stuart and Charles. Charles recently married, and I am excited to welcome my sweet daughter-in-law, Nicole, into the family. Our household is filled with love and joy, thanks to our three pups – Sophie, Baxter, and Goldie – and our cat, Henry. In my free time, I enjoy reading, baking, going to the beach, and spending time with family and friends. 

I am incredibly excited about this year, and I am confident it’s going to be the best one yet! Let’s make it an unforgettable year of creativity, growth, and learning.
